Who is Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown? And Why She’s Important.
Who is Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown?
Ketanji Brown Jackson was the first African American woman to be nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court. She was nominated by President Joe Biden on February 28, 2022, and confirmed by the U.S. Senate on April 7, 2022.
Prior to being nominated to the Supreme Court Justice, Jackson was a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
Jackson served as Judge since 2013 and was nominated by President Barack Obama in 2012.
Jackson was born in 1970 in Washington D.C. She is 52 years old this year.
She received a bachelor’s degree in government, magna cum laude, and a J.D., cum laude, from Harvard University in 1992 and 1996.
Why is her nomination so important?
Jackson’s first black woman nomination is an important landmark in the history of the Supreme court.
Since the Supreme Court established in 1789, of the 115 justices on the Supreme Court, 108 have been white men.
MLK’s Dream Realized
The day the Senate took roll call to confirm Jackson into the Supreme court was exactly 54 years after Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated.
In a way, her confirmation was realizing MLK’s dream 54 years ago of an America in which people are judged “not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”
Inspiration for Young Girls
Not many Black women have served as Judge at the State or Federal Level.
It is easier for young girls of color to aspire to reach their highest goals when they see others who have done so before them.
Ketanji Jackson is an inspiration for millions of young girls all around the world.
And a reminder for all of us to never stop dreaming.
